Story
Devan (Salman Khan) and Danny (Zayed Khan) are blood bothers. Gyanesh (Anil Kapoor) is their step-brother and is also a mentally under-developed man. They are the sons of a multi-billionaire business man in London. Devan comes out of the house in his teens as he hates his father and he settles as a chorus singer in Prague. His father dies and leaving the entire fortune in the name of Gyanesh. Devan and Danny unite and plot against Gyanesh to steal his money. The rest of the story is about how Gyanesh makes them realize the value of human bonds and brotherly love.

Actors:
Salman Khan tried to re-enact the antics he had portrayed in David Dhawan films. But his characterization does not demand similar antics. His performance in the final scene with Boman Irani is good. Katrina Kaif is adequate as the heroine. Anil Kapoor is excellent as a mentally immature man. Zayed Khan fits the bill with a character of negative shades. Mithun Chakravarthy is good in a brief yet vital role of the attorney. Boman Irani is nice as heroine's father.

Technical departments:

Story - screenplay - direction: Story of the film has some shades of Taal (musical subject). Story is quite predictable. Treatment of the film is formulaic. Screenplay is uninteresting. Characterizations in the film are bad except for that of Anil Kapoor's. Direction by Subhai Ghai is clichéd. There is no soul in the film.

Other technical departments: Music by AR Rehman is very good. But Subhash Ghai could not capitalize on it. Cinematography by Kabir Lal is good. The sets and locations explored are beautiful. Dialogues of the film are routine. Production values are very good.

Analysis: Subhai Ghai is the master of drama in Hindi films. How would a drama sound if there is no soul and feel to it? 'Yuvaraaj' is an example of drama that has neither soul nor substance. The script is clichéd and characterizations are bad. On a whole, Yuvaraj disappoints.

Story

surya s/o krishnan Krishnan (Surya) loves Malini (Simran) and marries her. Krishnan becomes a more responsible person after giving birth to Surya (Surya). For Surya, his father is a role model and a motivator. Surya falls in love with Meghan who he met on train. He goes to the extent of going to USA to see that girl. Something terrible happens and it forces Surya into a depression. The rest of the story is all about how his parents motivate to redeem himself.

Artists Performance

surya s/o krishnanSurya: Surya played the role that spans a lifetime. He is an extremely gifted actor and he plays two roles of varied dimensions without imitating anybody. He portrayed various shades in a highly impressive style. He applied minimal/realistic make-up unlike Kamal Hassan and came up with fabulous histrionics. The dubbing done to Surya is superb.

surya s/o krishnanOthers: Sameera Reddy sweeps you off your feet with her looks in this film. She is looking ravishingly sexy (no exposing). Her smile is cool. The dubbing done to her has a sexy huskiness in voice. Divya Spandana (Ramya of Kannada films) is adequate. Simran is excellent and you can see the transformation of her from a teen girl to 50-year old lady.

surya s/o krishnanStory - screenplay - direction: It is pretty hard to incorporate a life story into 3 hour film. Life is not like a box of chocolates; it has many bitter moments too. Director tried to narrate the story of a life time in ‘Forrest Gump’ style. But making a biographical film in India has a strong drawback. People enjoy the good moments of life, but are little averse to the bitterness life offers. And a semi-biographical story should be told with nice amount of dramatization like Mani Ratnam did for Guru film. I don’t find anything wrong with the direction as Gowtam Menon is just perfect in this film. What I did not like is the screenplay in the second half. We can’t watch hero going through depression and resorting to drugs. The pace of the film is the major problem. The entire romance thread between Sameera Reddy and Surya is excellent and extremely natural. The kidnap rescue episode and the war scene in the end slow down the pace of the film further.

surya s/o krishnanOther departments: Music of the film is fabulous. All three guitar based songs
– Yedane Koyake, Nalone Pongenu Narmada and Monna Kanipinchavu – are magnificent. Listening to the music of the film, nobody would have an iota of doubt about the strained relationship of Gowtam Menon and Harris Jayaraj. Dialogues are crisp and realistic. There are many English dialogues as well. Cinematography by Ratnavelu captures the mood of the film. Production values are extraordinary.

surya s/o krishnanAnalysis: The movie starts off on a grim mode. The first half of the film is nice with the romance between ‘Surya – Sameera’ being the highlight. But the second half is too slow and little boring. Semi-biographical films would not work in Telugu unless there are dramatic elements in it. The positive points of the film are Surya’s multifaceted performance, the romance with Sameera and the music. The negative points are unappealing second half and slow narration. Surya s/o Krishnan is a kind of film which you would like to watch it on a DVD for the depth it offers, but not in cinema halls where we watch films to get entertained. On a whole, Surya s/o Krishnan is a film that suffers from too much of realism and slow paced narration.

Story

avakai biryani Akbar Kalam (Kamal Kamaraju) is an auto driver in a small town Devarakonda (Nizam area). He is a poor guy who wants to pursue his degree through an open university, but fails in English language due to lack of coaching. Lakshmi Jandhyala comes to Devarakonda along with her parents and siblings after they lose everything in Polavaram. Lakshmi wants to start her life afresh by taking the responsibility of running her house by preparing pickles and selling them. Lakshmi's father hates Muslim community and asks his family members to stay away from them. Lakshmi likes the individuality and the Good Samaritan nature of Akbar. The rest of the story is all about how Akbar and Lakshmi get united.

Artists Performance

avakai biryaniKamal Kamaraju: Kamal Kamaraju was a little inflexible in the role of a cop in Godavari. But he is a revelation in this film. He understood the character well and acted like a perfect method actor. His expressions, body language and dialogue modulation are impeccable. His performance in the scene where he questions the chief minister is awesome. Telugu film industry has got yet another fine actor in the form of Kamal with Avakai Biryani film.

avakai biryaniBindu Madhavi: Bindu Madhavi is very attractive in the role of a heroine. She is quite photogenic with perfect Telugu features. But she has to work on the body language (especially hand movements and postures). And if we don't find her character endearing in this film, it is not her fault. We generally have the tendency to mistake the characterization as the acting. Her character loses out in this film because of the poor characterization done by the director.

avakai biryaniOthers: Rao Ramesh mixed the dialogue delivery of his legendry father Rao Gopal Rao and the body language of Prakash Raj to play the character of Masterji in this film. Though Rao Ramesh is pretty good, he should consider underplaying the characters than dominating them. The guy who did the role of tapori (hero's friend with goggles and blade) oozes ease coupled with and spontaneity. He is a precious find in this film. The characterization of this guy's character is good. The kid who did the role of hero's assistant is terrific.

avakai biryaniStory - screenplay - direction: Earlier Anish Kuruvilla directed a short film called 'Confessions of a Filmmaker' and screened it to the press. After watching the film, I felt that he is a director material but he has to work on expressing his thoughts in a systematic way. But again, it was supposed to be a short film and a personal film.

When you make a full-length feature film like Avakai Biryani for the public, there is some minimum structure/grammar to be followed while narrating the story. There are certain set of methods to be adhered to in order to evoke emotions among the audiences. He did not follow any of it. The direction of the film is ok in parts. But the screenplay is bad. Narration of the film is pathetically slow. It literally moves at a snail's pace. There are glaring mistakes/loopholes in the script.

If the producer were someone else, I wouldn't have even bothered to write down a review. A film like Avakai Biryani is quite unexpected from Sekhar Kammula who gave a new meaning to Telugu movies with the films like Dollar Dreams, Anand, Godavari & Happy Days. All his films had nice emotions.

When Sekhar Kammula produces a film with somebody who he has worked for three films, we expect the film to have good structure/grammar. It is ok if the director could not translate the emotions from script to the screen. But what if script itself has a problem? Sekhar told that he gave a nod to the script. How can he okay the script, when it is so incomplete?

There are three scenes that made me smile in the film:

1. When grandma says poindi.. poindi.. pooooooindi. (power problem)
2. After Rao Ramesh tells muthyala muggu dialogue about vooru being kotha pelli koothuru, a guy questions ‘em CM vachi pelli chesukuntada?’
3. ‘Ee vooru manadira’ episode during auto race.

There are two scenes that impressed me

1. Two small girls trying to get some water
2. Hero questioning CM (most impressive scene. In fact I expected the film to take Swades route after this)

Let me analyze some aspects in the film:

1. Love story: The love saga between Hindu girl (avakai) and Muslim boy (biryani) forms the crux of the story. It is established right in the beginning that heroine's father is a Muslim-hater. And father's hatred could be used to create a nice dramatic impact. But father is conveniently sent to an other village and he will only return and realize in the last 15 minutes of the film. What happened in the one and half hour between has no interest value to the main plot of the film. The lack of any conflict point makes the middle part of the film uninteresting.

2. Characterization of heroine: Heroine is said to be an independent girl who wants to feed the entire family by selling pickles. But her pickle business part is shown in the latter part of the second half by leaving her ambition and individuality to the wind.

3. Characterization of Masterji: Masterji is said to be the shrewd yet cruel landlord in the village. His characterization goes awry by the time story progresses. A shrewd guy like Masterji accepts to give away all his autos if the hero wins the race. And he runs away from constables like a comedian at the end!!!!

4. Characterization of Babar: He is supposed to be the top goon in the village. He threatens Akbar all the time. But when Akbar approaches heroine's house in the night, Baber will be going away fearing him.

5. Expelling from the village: There is a dramatic moment in the film when Masterji expels hero from the village. Everybody would be curious to know what hero is going to do. A few more scenes would have added some interest value to it. But the director shows an immediate solution to it and fixes the problem.

avakai biryaniOther departments: Cinematography is the highlight of the film. The framing and the camera movements are lovely. The vast landscapes are captured with a lot of aesthetic sense. Music of the film is another plus point. All the songs are very good. Good music and good cinematography makes the song visuals more appealing. Dialogues should have been more interesting. Editing should have been better. Production values are nice. Anish Kuruvilla should be appreciated for extracting the best from cinematographer and the music director.

avakai biryaniAnalysis: The first fifteen minutes of the film is good where all the characters are introduced. But movie fails to take off from there. The CM episode is good, but no efforts were made to capitalize on it. The prolonged auto race in the second half looks more like a climax point in the film as people have forgotten about unresolved point is the love story between a Hindu girl and a Muslim boy by then. The second half lacks emotional impact and is devoid of gripping narration. Lack of consistent conflict point makes Avakai Biryani insipid. It is an honest effort from Anish Kuruvilla, but falls short of the threshold level. Though the cinematography, music and intentions are good, a bad screenplay and painstakingly slow narration makes Avakai Biryani taste bitter

Dasvidaniya Hindi Movie Review

Story
Amal Kaul (Vinay Pathak) is an average, middle class, introvert and middle-aged bachelor who does the boring job of an account manager in a pharmaceutical company. When he goes to see a doctor for stomach ache, he is diagnosed with cancer. His doctor gives him a time-frame of three months to live. Instead of worrying about death, he prepares a list of his unfulfilled dreams and goes on to realize them.

Actors:
Vinay Pathak who has portrayed innocence and stupidity in Bheja Fry (Jeevi review) comes up with an exceptionally brilliant performance in this film. He can create a lot of impact with minute expressions. If you think Vinay is good at comedy, you will realize that he is great in emotional scenes. Neha Dhupia who acted in lots of glamorous and unforgettable roles in the past comes up with a natural performance in this film. She wore no make-up. Saurabh Shukla is hilarious with nasty portrayal of ever-eating irritating boss. Ranvir Shorey’s cameo is good.

Technical departments:

Story - screenplay - direction: The basic idea is borrowed from Hollywood flick The Bucket List (2007) (jeevi review). The treatment and conceiving of scenes is original. Screenplay is good and direction is nice. The director treated the first half with nice entertainment and the second half with heart-touching scenes. The alter-ego concept is nice. The following scenes are pretty good -

1. The scene of bossing his boss
2. Giving ride to the sales girl who sold her the car
3. His minute expressions while talking to Neha in the car.
4. Saying I Love You to Neha using dumb charades.
5. The crying scene in Russia
6. Singing a song to the mother
7. The way he fulfils his last wish
8. The titles rolling scene in which the slide show of the 10 wishes is shown

Other technical departments: Music of the film is soulful. Dialogues are witty (Put a guitar to your pelvis and you think you can be Elvis) and thought-provoking (when his teacher asks him what his problem in life was, he replies ‘Life is my problem’). Cinematography is neat.

Analysis: First half of the film is entertaining. Second half has heart touching moments though the narration slows down a bit. It is a suicidal attempt for anybody to make a film on death, because if it’s not handled well the film will bite dust at the box office. This film tells us that death gives us a chance to live the life to fullest if you knew when you are going to die. On a whole, Dasvidaniya is a very good film and a must watch.

Story
Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan) is a nurse. Kunal (John Abraham) is a fashion photographer. Neha (Priyanka Chopra) works for a fashion magazine. They live in Miami. Sameer and Kunal are desperate for a rented accommodation. They had to lie to Neha that they are gays in order to share accommodation with her. One lie leads to another one. They also fall in love with Neha, but unable to express their love because she thinks that they are gays. Meanwhile Neha gets a new boss Abhimanyu (Bobby Deol) who falls head over heels for Neha. She too likes him. The rest of the story is all about who Neha goes with.

Actors:
Abhishek Bachchan is very good with his ‘gay’ antics. John Abraham is cool. Priyanka Chopra is red hot in bikini dress in one scene. She is perfect for this role. Shilpa Shetty did a special bikini song that comes during the titles of the film. Bobby Deol fits the bill. Kirron Kher has a brief but hilarious role as mother. Boman Irani is wasted.

Technical departments:

Story - screenplay - direction: It is a comedy film in which a small lie leads to several funny things. Direction of the film is nice. Screenplay is adequate. The narration goes little slow in the second half. However, director could able to bring lot of funny moments out in the film. But, the basic premise of two guys forced to act as gays in order to get a rented accommodation does not sound convincing at all. The scenes in which the gays make Bobby (editor-in-chief of Verve magazine) a bakra by teaching about how he should dress and behave in front of Priyanka.

The best scenes in the film are

1. The ‘love in Venice’ illustration by Abhishek.
2. Kirron Kher entering heroine’s house
3. Kirron Kher giving arti to John after accepting him as son-in-law/daughter-in-law
4. Gabbar Singh s a gay because his punch line was 'Kitne Aadmi The'.
4. The Kuch Kuch Hota Hai scene where John and Priyanka dance in synchronization with Sharukh & Kajol for a song in front of a giant TV.
5. The scene in which Priyanka suspects that these guys are also trying for Bobby.

You can see innumerable reference to Hollywood films in characterizations, plots and scenes. Here are a few among them

1. I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry – Two guys conveniently acting as gays
2. When Harry Met Sally – faking the orgasm
3. The Devil Wears Prada – heroine’s office set up and Boman Irani’s intro scene
4. Meet the parents – hero working as male nurse
5. Dumb and Dumber - Two guys scarifying the lady to a 3rd guy after fighting for her (and remember fundraising dinner fiasco similar to that of auction fiasco in Dostana)

Other technical departments: The songs composed by Vishal Sekhar are good. Cinematography and visuals are very nice. Dialogues are witty. Choreography is cool.

Analysis: The first half of the film is good. But the second half has got some problems. The story meanders in the second half. However, the director succeeds in getting things right in the climax. The plus points of the film are casting (Abhishek, John and Priyanka) and comedy. The negative points are illogical premises and loose ends in the second half. On a while, Dostana holds a good entertainment value for multiplex crowds.

Review

Story
There are four people in Mumbai who borrowed money from a bank. And they fail to replay the EMIs (Equated Monthly Installments). Hence the bank hands over the list of defaulters to a recovery agency called ‘Good Luck’ which is run by Sattar Bhai (Sanjay Dutt). Sattar Bhai is a hardcore goon who recovers money from defaulters at any cost. He gets the idea of becoming a politician and decides to win over the hearts of people. That is when these four people had to approach Sattar Bhai. The rest of the story is all about how Sattar Bhai solves the problems of these people and wins their hearts.

Actors:
Sanjay Dutt impresses again in his inimitable style. This character is like an extension of his Munnabhai series. Manoj Joshi’s character is styled in the lines of Circuit in Munnabhai series. Arjun Rampal’s character (except for the cheating nature) is like an extension of his role in ‘Rock on’. Malaika Arora is sexy and got two songs for her and she looks little elder. Urmila Matondkar is alright. Kulbhushan Karbhanda is good.

Technical departments:

Story - screenplay - direction: Story of the film offers nothing new. Screenplay is shabby. Though he has taken four different cases as EMI victims, he could not explore the problems seriously. There is huge inconsistency in characterizations. The character of Urmila Montodker is whimsical, ruthless and ambitious. But she appears very soft and sensible when falling in love with Sanjay Dutt. The climax of the film is incomplete.

Other technical departments: Music of the film is adequate. Cinematography is average. Dialogues are mediocre.

Analysis: First half of the film is bad and second half is slightly better. The only solace for the film is Sanjay Dutt’s comedy in the second half. Otherwise, it is a badly made film with no script-sense. On a whole, EMI is a kind of film we prefer to watch in installments on DVD.
